I have found that when using a scanner it will take the predominant shade as the benchmark and take the other shades as comparison.
 
Essentially if you have a white background, it will look “washed out” like some of your scans do.  
Take for example one of my first images that I spent a little while editing and darkening to bring out the detail: https://derpiboo.ru/206648  
Too much free background means the scanner has trouble picking out the detail.
 
If you fill in the bodies and give at least a little shading to the background the scanner will pick up much more and really show your skills.
