This pic could be referring to the Shine Run mode in Double Dash. You’re objective was to grab and hold onto the Shine Sprite until a timer ran out. The player holding the Shine Sprite when the timer ran out would win.

Of course, you would be attacked and chased by the other players. If you get hit, you drop it, and the next person to pick it up restarted the timer.
