Well, I would interpret the cannon as a type of long-range weapon which propels heavy and/or explosive objects via a gunpowder explosion. As for the canon, I’d strictly limit it to what’s in the show itself. That means that Flash’s existence may be canonical, but Twilight feels not even the slightest bit for him.
But it’s still cannon! Depending on what exactly what one would interpret as the “cannon” at least.(use you imagination!)
Or “romance”, or “normal human (/equine) relations”…
