That was one of the best parts of Justice League, hands down
When characters are capable of moving hundreds of times faster than the human brain can possibly process their existence let alone react to it, and they can punch enough to atomize a person, yeah no, I don’t care how smart and clever they are, they’re getting their ass reduced to exotic matter in a literal millisecond.
I slightly disagree with the second part. It’d be an uphill battle, but a non-powered hero can beat one with powers if he’s smarter and knows the other guy’s weakness. That doesn’t always make it less believable. It all depends on how the writer does it.
Besides, saying Batman doesn’t have powers is a technically at best nowadays. You can easily say he has super intelligence without actually changing any of his character.
Basically Batman can take down Superman in some stories 1. because he’s popular and typically its his books that happens in, and 2. because non-powered superheroes if written realistically wouldn’t last half a second, so apply some suspension of disbelief.
I would like to point out that this is quoting the DCAU, in which Supes was never as overpowered as his comic counterpart.
No worries, I don’t mind late comments. I do it all the time, yo =) .
However, I will still argue! =D
With Supes, it usually comes down to the writer. While he does regularly fight gods, demigods, and other such nigh-invulnerable entities, his arsenal is too great when compared to his weaknesses. Kryptonite, magic, and a lack of sunlight are essentially his only weaknesses. Now, on the other end of that spectrum, he has fixed a rip in the fabric of space and time with his mind, reversed time through faster than light flight in the opposite direction of the Earth’s rotation, can swing a punch capable of unleashing the force of a supernova several times over, can withstand a supernova to the face, can become even stronger when exposed to the light of a blue star, can vibrate his own molecules fast enough to become intangible and pass through solid matter, can read minds, has x-ray vision, has heat vision that is only limited by how much sunlight he’s absorbed, has superhuman strength and endurance, has frigid ice breath, once accidentally destroyed most of a solar system with a sneeze, et cetera.
Sure, some of DC’s other heroes have some of these abilities, but in a pinch Superman can have all of them. The Flash is the fastest thing alive, but it’s been shown that Supes can at least keep up with him fairly effortlessly. The Martian Manhunter is a much better comparison, but unfortunately a lot of his story arcs get abandoned or he gets relegated to background events… which is strange considering how useful, intelligent, and powerful he is.
Really, as I said earlier in this wall of text, it can all come down to the writer. As an example of that, even though I’ve been arguing how invincible Superman is and has been in the past, that hasn’t stopped Batman from kicking his ass a few times.
So… uh… there?
Sorry for the really late comment, ignore it if you like but…
Superman has never been invincible, ever, in the DC-verse especially. Most of his villians are actually more powerful or at least somewhat smarter than even him. This is a guy who regularly fights a 5th Dimensional Imp, who’s like Discord on steroids, and a dark being best described as an Anti-God.
He’s not even really the most powerful member of the Justice League, as Martian Mannhunter and Flash both have advantages that put them above Superman regularly.
Yes, he does always find a way to beat the bad guys, but so does every other Superhero. Finding a way to save the day everytime is not a feature unique to Superman, or the Superhero genre in general, its a trope that’s existed for thousands of years. So its not really something to pin on just Superman on.
I never said Supes wasn’t a cool guy, I just can’t get invested when the fate of mankind rests with him. I just know he’ll pull something mighty out of his ass and save the day.
Now personality-wise, just as a guy, yeah, Supes is a great dude. Few heroes would fly into the fray with the kind of gusto and heart that he does, just to save people. And what you said holds merit too. With the exception of some of DC’s alternate universe Superman counterparts, he’s very humble and always respects / appreciates the help of his fellow superheroes and Earth’s ordinary citizens alike. Plus his chemistry when snarking back and forth with Batman and the Flash is hilarious.
Well yeah.
The interest isn’t if he’s gonna save the day, the interest is how.
Superman works best as an icon to be looked up to and aspire to be. He’s a guy who can tow the entire planet around, but has the restraint to handle the most fragile things with the utmost care, including life. (cheesy, but true)
It would take me forever to dig it up, but there’s a comic page that I saw tumbl’d on my dash with him and another hero in central park getting stopped by a beat cop who then recognizes them. The cop makes a comment about how the park will be nice and safe with the two of them there. And Superman corrects him; the three of them. Without a trace of sarcasm. Properly written Superman is an awesome guy.
To be fair, I’ve never really cared for Supes that much either. He’s just too powerful. I can never really get that invested in a scenario that hinges on him saving the day because, c’mon, he’s Superman. He’s like the tactical nuclear strike of superheroes. Pour the martinis, we’re already saved.
With that said, however, this speech is still completely awesome.

But isn’t Superman going “all out” his trump card to?
As the one comment I made that I occasionally still see a +1 pop up on in reply to someone else saying the same thing goes.
In just two hits Superman had him so terrified for his life he immediately has to pull out his trump card, the ability to stimulate every single one of the body’s pain receptors at the same time.
Even before the upgrade, Twilight strikes me as a Pony in constant struggle with her power.

Only video I found with the fight Darkseid-Superman and Luthor intervention at the end.

Yep. Darkseid slams him with a Pain Cage.
He calls it the ‘Agony Matrix’. It was still a good fight, though.

Wait, what?! Seriously?
Well, that just put a whole new light on this…
Wait, he still lost the battle he made that speech in?
So Discord is the one who actually beat Tirek?
