There are two theories for this. First one is that the Princesses had access to the Elements of Harmony the first time they battled Tirek, which got them an easy win - an option that was no longer available in his second invasion.
 
Second one is that Scorpan warned them before Tirek got fed enough to become able to drain alicorn magic. With Scorpan’s help, they tracked him down and defeated him. This time, they dispatched Discord, who is the only one able to both easily track and apprehend Tirek before he would become able to feed on alicorns. By the time Discord’s treachery came to light, fighting back against Tirek was already impossible for separate alicorns - he would have easily picked them up one by one and drained them.

Yeah, that’s the thing people seem to be missing. 4 princess combo twi can match Tirek even beefed up with Discord’s raw power, but discord himself can laugh off anything but the elements. He’s not strong, he’s just super-effective against ponies. And Tirek too, at least until Tirek has more raw power than he does, which only seems to be about the same as a princess.

It’s not made clear how they beat Tirek, but I guess they didn’t bother putting Discord in Tartarus because they sealed him in stone. We don’t even know if Tartarus could hold Discord. They also don’t seem to have a way to know about escapees until it’s too late, so it was probably safer to keep Discord in plain sight.

They couldn’t defeat Discord without the Elements of Harmony, and I doubt King Sombra was NEARLY as big a threat as Tirek AND Discord combined. The princesses knew they stood no chance against Discord without the Elements, so they figured if they couldn’t beat them, they may as well hinder their efforts.

what bothers me is that the princesses didn’t even try to fight. If they near effortlessly defeated sombra and discord in the flashbacks, and they even beat tirek in the flashback, why were they suddenly terrified? also, when discord was first defeated, why didn’t they put him in tarsus like they did with tirek.

To be honest, I’m kind of reminded of this.
