That makes a lot more sense from a linguistic - and mathematical - standpoint, saying “split in(to) two halves”, as you say; but over time people have shortened it to either of the other two, which make much less sense.
Blame the evolution of language, I guess. :)
Maybe it was supposed to be “split in two halves”, 2×½=1
There you got both “split in two” and “split in half”.
Or did it split in TWO?
Ahhh, the English language… where you can have 2 = ½. xD
