Twi’s father, Night Light, was an agent of the Vanguards. In ancient times the organization was the one who nearly killed off the magi race, but have long since been reformed since that time. Night was part of a small team that tracks down and keep tabs on any surviving magi left in the world, whilst keeping their existence a secret. His team eventually found a lone magi living in a small rural town, a young girl named Velvet, who is a caretaker of an orphanage in the area. Night and his team offered the girl asylum within Vanguards HQ so that she may be protected from those who would harm her but she refused and demanded that they leave her be. The guards were authorized to use any means to gain “cooperation” but Night advised against it. Instead he decided to live with Velvet and the orphans in an effort to gain her trust.
