Season One was a beautiful, intricately woven season. In hindsight, I would be willing to bet that if we weren’t shocked by how not-bad everything was, a few episodes would have been ranked lower. Still, even a subpar episode wasn’t too much of a downer because just about every episode was part of a bigger picture, and it had two great episodes that really tied everything together: Cutie Mark Chronicles, and Best Night Ever.
 
Season Four has been something of a return to this formula, with multiple ongoing plot threads and continuity, as well as lots of consistently good episodes.
 
While by no means bad, (it even contains my all-time favourite episode), Season Two suffered from a lack of continuity and cohesiveness. A bad episode was just a bad episode, rather than part of a bigger picture.
 
I actually thought that the first half of Season Three felt more like the successor to Season One than Season Two did. But with half the episodes of a normal season, every bad episode hit twice as hard, and barring a few gems, most of the episodes were just a mess. Season Three takes a fairly unanimous spot as the worst season by far.

And here I thought he was saying mathematically that 2 is greater than 4, which is greater than 1, which is much greater than 3.
