Not gonna lie, Rarity is no stranger to charming Spike into do her bidding, as reaffirmed in the beginning of ‘Rarity Takes Manehattan.’

full
Heck, even Twilight looked displeased by Rarity blatantly taking advantage of the poor guy.

However, even when she’s using Spike as a cheap source of manual labor, she often rewards him for his efforts. Despite her occasional bouts with her selfish desires, and her flirtatious methods to getting favors from others, Rarity has never been a flat-out manipulator.

This brings up another issue with the relationship between Rarity and Spike……

Some of you may read what I just said, regarding Rarity not being manipulative, and try to bring up the time she charmed Spike out of that fire ruby, in ‘Secret of my Excess,’ but it’s not that simple. The first time I watched the episode, it did rub me the wrong way. I asked myself, “Why would they would allow the Element of Generosity to do something like that?” Though, after the second viewing, I realize that this was NOT the case…

Rarity: [from outside] Helloooo? [opens the door] Anypony home? Twilight? [notices Spike’s ruby and gasps] Is that a Fire Ruby?! That must be at least twenty carats! No inclusions, pristine facets!
Spike: And totally delicious.
Twilight: Uh, if you guys don’t mind?
Rarity: Oh! Uh, of course. I just came by to see if you had any books on historical fashion.
[at Spike] Did you say “delicious?”
Spike: Sure did! Next week’s my birthday, and this is my birthday dinner!
Twilight: Start with this one. [gives Rarity a book]
Rarity: Thanks, Twilight. I’ve got a feeling ruffled taffeta capes are going to make a huge comeback this season, and I want to be ahead of the game… [chomps her hoof as Spike coddles his ruby]
I hope it’s as tasty as it is beautiful, Spike. I’ve never seen anything quite so stunning before.
Spike: Gosh… you really like it, huh?
Rarity: Like it? It’s magnificent.
Spike: Then you should have it. This beautiful gem was meant to be with you.
Rarity: I don’t know what to say. This is so thoughtful! Oh, my little Spikey-Wikey! [kisses his cheek] Thank you so much! [she hops all the way out the door]
Twilight: Wow, Spike! That’s one of the kindest, most generous things you’ve ever done! I’ve never seen Rarity so happy!
Spike: I will never wash this cheek again…

Based on how the scene played out, Spike was already having second thoughts about eating the gem, before Rarity turned on the charm. Also, Rarity’s actions were not out of greed, or maliciousness, she just didn’t want to see such a beautiful gem eaten. As further proof, this was also confirmed by episode writer, M.A. Larson. Spike gave Rarity the fire ruby because he cares about her, plus he knew it would serve more of a purpose in Rarity’s possession. More importantly, he gave her the ruby because he WANTED to do so. Also, judging from his sad expression afterwards, he didn’t even expect anything in return. Fortunately for him, he was wrong…

Not a Llama - Happy April Fools Day!

Chaotic Neutral
I have to agree to some extent that Rarity does in fact take advantage of Spike’s own willingness to help her, same could also be said about how Twilight treats him as well.

Manipulate just seems like the incorrect word here seeing as no one really uses any sort of leverage against Spike to get what they want out of him, at least to my recollection (maybe Zecora that one time during “Just for Sidekicks”…maybe, debatable).

So far as ‘exploitation/abuse’ go, how the hell is Rares any worse to Spike than Twiley-or, for that matter, any of their slapstick-violence-prone chums? At least he gets the odd snack for his trouble-did AJ ever compensate the rest of the gang on the multiple occasions they bailed out her farmstead?

@pia-chan
Everyone has their opinions, but I think that she takes advantage of Spike for example on more than one occasion to flirted with another Pony facing the. Even uses the same tactics used with Spike with another pony (don’t remember his name) so pull the carriage to go to the Gala of the gallop.

The book in general I do not care much that not the concidero part of the Show, since the situation seems very generic and then read prequel coz I don’t think back to spend on another book.

Is the “charity” tag referring to an actual charity, or is it the name of the pony petting Spike? If it’s a pony, where is she from?

Rarity has doesn’t conssider Spike as a mere tool. That’d make her look pretty bad hmm? She treats him in a special way and even has a pet name for him. She also rewards him with sweet words, so I don’t see her manipulating him, but him offering his help to her and she’s used to have him around, which she also enjoys. And in that part of the text of the book, it looked like she was actually bothered by Charity patting his head and calling him Spikey-wikey than because she used her help.

They have a right to anonymity. I don’t know why people assume everyone who is an anon is a coward instead of someone who doesn’t want to register. It matters even less considering they have temporary names.

The fact that you have a name does not make your argument any stronger, and bringing it up at all actually makes you harder to listen to.

At least I have a name to express my opinion. Also do not say that you are ignorant. Even is what you are to begin with, is an anonymous at least gives a name to let everyone know who you are here you do not hide.

Heck, this topic again? Didn’t even the writers standed their opinion on this matter and said that it was his willing to help no matter what because of his love for her.

The same shit occured in Secret of My Excess, and there is even people that still says Rarity manipulated him, even going against what the show creators tried to communicate

@Tharvos
haha ignorance? srsly? nothing better that to treat other as ignorants so to make your point more valid. Sadly you don’t convince anypony, think the way you want, just I don’t buy you, and a lot others don’t either.

There isn’t much to understand. It is obvious that used to spike as a servant while manipulates your heart.

The book implies, by which this mad? Simple by that other pony does
the same thing it to enlist the help of Spike. She simply fights by his
tool against its rival.
