On the surface after skimming through a few daily comics, it may appear Garfield has very little lore to speak of. What does he do? Live with Jon and Odie for forty years?
Short answer: sort of.
Long answer: no. Garfield’s canon is there, the puzzle pieces are all available, but it’s all thrown together in a confusing mess. What’s the solution? My proposed theory is that Garfield’s media franchise consists of two universes, which we will refer to as Garfverse-A and Garfverse-B. Garfverse-A primarily focuses on the strips, while Garfverse-B focuses on the animated shows, CGI films, and Garfield’s Nine Lives (a great book btw, it has some genuinely good horror.)They have many things in common and many things that are different, so first we’ll discuss their similarities.
Both Garfverse A and B:
• Feature Garfield, Odie, and Jon as main characters.
• It’s established in both Garfverses that Garfield used to live with Jon alone, until Odie was introduced into their household about two months after Garfield.
• The cast has all aged forty years without actually physically changing. How a cat and dog can live this long is beyond me, but this is also a strip where animals talk so I won’t challenge the logistics.
Alright, time for the differences in lore.
Lyman: In Garfverse-A, Lyman is Jon’s roommate for the first several years before disappearing (out-of-universe, this is due to his role in the strip being replaced by Garfield). Lyman introduced Odie into Garfield’s house. In Garfverse-B, Lyman does not introduce Odie (Jon buys him) and only shows up after being lost in Australia or something for thirty years.
4th Wall: In Garfverse-A, occasional jokes are made about the fourth wall inside the comic, but rarely expanded upon. In Garfverse-B, it is all confirmed to be a television show multiple times with entire plot points based around this.
Age: In Garfverse-A, the characters age in all areas except for on the outside (this means Jon is over sixty and still fit enough to dance - potential feat?) but in Garfverse-B, no aging is actually displayed. However, it is confirmed time does pass between episodes with offhand gags.
Physical differences: Garfverse-A depicts Garfield as fully grown on his first day of existence. He also learns how to walk on two legs and undergoes a design change. Garfverse-B, on the other hand, has an entire backstory about how Garfield was a baby and always knew how to walk.
There are some other canon details I probably forgot, but I think this is definitely a good amount of explanation about the lore. What do you all think?
