I could of been more positive too. That being said, I’d definitely like to see the inside of his house with Pinkie hosting a ‘Spike has a new house party’ and somehow manages to fit everyone in Ponyville inside his house(even without the dragon lair). Then see a few days where just him and his friends (Pip, the CMC,Button Mash,etc) chilling out, maxing and relaxing all cool.

Yea to be perfectly honest I didn’t even notice the R typo. Would have just said Rainbow likes to roll her R’s. lol. Oh well to error is human.

I still like it and look forward to the rest of the progression. It only makes since that Spike would have his own place.

@Ambris
That’s the truth, one can so easily proof read even multiple times and miss obvious errors. And when it comes to content rather than typos, as the writer it’s not too difficult to accidentally write something that assumes the reader is following your train of thought and they could just have no idea what you’re saying xD

Though I actually didn’t see your typo, the word meant to be there was obvious so it just didn’t even register in my mind.

Re: the basement, I assume it’s “boring” by Rainbow Dash’s standards (remember, this is being told by her). But even if it were empty, if she and Twilight Sparkle had the dosh to buy a house for Spike, why not do it? Had they sent him to the library’s basement then that would’ve just been sad, but now he actually has his own home and still has easy access to the library to visit Twilight.

Ambris, if you have the time, I recommend taking a few updates to tell Spike’s side of the story here. Judging by the number of comments on this post, there’s obviously lots of interest in him.

@Ambris
Yeah, sorry about the criticisms from earlier. I just feel it was kind of hard to interpret what some of the implications were conveying. I mean, have Twi and Dash been together for awhile? How old is Spike? Now that you’ve answered some of those questions, the whole thing becomes a lot less problematic. But we didn’t have that information at first, so I fear many of us, myself included to my shame, jumped to some conclusions. During a lot of Twilight shipping fictions, Spike unfortunately is forgot or is kicked out. I appreciate you as a writer actually coming up with an explanation. That shows thought and initiative on your part. So sorry for jumping to conclusions like that. Didn’t quite understand how Spike was portrayed or interpreted in the tumbler (as another person stated, he has only shown up like once during the whole thing, so it was hard to interpret what his age was and what his position was).

One last question if you don’t mind. Dash says herself that the library basement is boring? Is it supposed to be really empty? Or is it full of equipment? If it’s empty, why wasn’t Spike just moved down there instead of purchasing a new house with elaborate tunnels built in? If it’s not empty and full of equipment, then this question can be ignored.

Thanks for the feedback~

As for the typo thing–well most artists are so in their head while working it’s easy to miss things like that. We know what is being said, so when reading the text, we tend to see the accurate text in our head, instead of what it actually on the paper/screen.

You, as the viewer don’t have the story your head already. And as your reading through, wanting to know what happens, that little mistake isn’t glossed over in you head, and is effectively a speed-bump in your comprehension of the text.

This is why it’s easy to miss as the creator, but stands out like a sore-thumb to the viewer.

It’s just as easy to assume otherwise. To assume something more positive.
This. All of it.
I too will admit that, looking back, the thing with Spike came a bit out of left field, but it’s easy enough to connect the dots to form something positive. I might also have paid more attention to adorbs Dash in the first panel*.
Then again, some of the things mentioned in this thread are really far-fetched.

  • not that the rest isn’t cute as well, but… THAT FACE :D

    Another point of critique, though at the same time a question: how come that artists sometimes miss obvious typos? For example, here in the second panel it reads “crrowded”. It’s not a really big deal, but I’ve seen cases where they forgot a letter in the URL on the image or something like that. I never understood how people can work for hours on an image, and then not take the 30 seconds to doublecheck things like that are correct.

    …that sounded kinda negative. Anyway, I love the things you draw, and look forward to wherever the TwiDash blog happens to go.

Anyways, I’m done arguing about it.

One thing I’ve always noticed is that the more popular you are, the more you get haters and people who are determined to say something bad about you.

It’s impossible change those people’s mind, and really, they’re just validating my work and my popularity by trying to shot me down with their biased arguments. So thank you–you may not have intended it, but it’s an ego boost for me.

I recommend, for you own sake, that you learn to think outside your biases and to intelligently and effectively ask questions. You’ll go farther in life. But if you’d rather just sling mud at me, then go ahead and try. I suppose you need to do something to make your life worth while. Might as well inflate my ego.

I appreciate that you can articulate criticism without getting nasty or petty. Unlike many of the people here.

I can also accept that I took my interpretation of Spike for granted, and didn’t spend much time presenting it to the reader. That much, I accept as a mistake of story telling on my part.

But in spite of that, it’s pretty clear that Spike didn’t have a huge issue with the dynamic, else I would would have illustrated the conflict. But since I didn’t, it should be obvious that he’s just fine with the new dynamic. Conservation of detail.

Additionally, what else could be done? Rainbow and Twilight are in a relationship, so it seems natural they’d move in together. It also seems natural that the library is just too small. Sure, I could write that it was plenty big, but this seemed more interesting and more natural considering the dynamic I envisioned.

So yeah, I get that I may not have established Spike’s relationship too well with Twilight prior to this comic. But I think within that context, it perfect natural. I also think that, the context of this comics’s happenings should make his relationship with Twilight fairly obvious. Which is why I’m baffled by a lot of people’s incredible negative and baseless interpretation.

Frankly, I feel as if at this point, if I wrote that Twilight really liked sauerkraut, then people who would accuse Twilight of being a Nazi. That is literally the amount of logic people are using on this comic, by taking something innocuous making the worst possible assumption from it.

It’s just as easy to assume otherwise. To assume something more positive.

@barbeque
Well… exactly. I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I was surprised and disappointed by this image. Ambris has shown himself to be able to construct engaging narratives, but now when it “mattered” to a principal character, this was all we got? It seems unlike him, and we are just left asking “Why?”

@Grieffon
I’m afraid I don’t understand. Are you saying that someone else made the choice as to how this Tumblr would unfold, and that Ambris had no ability to determine went into his own creation? Are you suggesting that he’s somehow being held against his will by a TwiDash shipper who is making him ignore the larger story of Twilight and Dash’s life and only make Super Squishy Happy Lesbian images? My God man, then what are you doing wasting time on Derpibooru!? Call the police! Call the navy! Form a search party!

I’ll wait here in case he checks in…

… oh, wait, it looks like he did. You’re off the hook this time.

@Ambris
Ambris, you are a talented artist and at times a great story crafter… but here you failed. Hence the strong reactions.

“In this canon, Spike is something like a younger brother to Twilight.”

Well, how are we supposed to know that? When did you take the time to develop Spike’s story? The answer is, you didn’t. There is no consensus in the fandom about what Spike and Twilight are to one another. The opinions range from “mother” to “friend” to “slaveholder.” You are the only one who can shape your headcanon for your readers and viewers. You will find that most Bronies are willing to accept others views when we have reason to, but please don’t automatically assume that we know everything that is going on in your head.

“Spike, like any teenager, would have jumped at the idea of getting away from his “chaperone” and living on his own.”

This is, once again, your personal views on his character. Spike has appeared in exactly one answer session previous to this one, and that was six months ago. At that time, we were given no indication that he was a teenager. Given your art style, his age was subjective at best. Even given that this Tumblr is set three-five years in the future, Spike’s age is something that is debated as well. Apparently, according to the newest comic, he’s even younger than the C.M.C.. Lauren Faust said she pictured him as being eight. That puts him at twelve! More realistic estimates of ten or so would make him fifteen, and if we’re really going to push it and call him twelve in the series that would still only make him seventeen in the Tumblr.

The only seventeen year olds I know who lived by themselves were runaways who were fleeing a horrific home life… and here’s Spike living by himself after his closest friend/mother/sibling/taskmaster gets a lesbian lover. A beautiful lesbian lover, granted, but still someone who “replaced” him.

Why would we automatically assume he was a teenager? Many Bronies believe that he’s going to be a little kid for centuries and centuries, not growing at all. Once again, you didn’t tell us any differently. Even in the image on this page, he’s still no bigger than Dash and Twilight. See the problem?

Ambris, you once made me fall in love with a “Santa Mare Pony” who you developed over seven strips. You have the ability to create believable narratives, and you’ve shown it again and again. Yet, when it came to one of the other principal characters, you left us up to our own devices to determine what had transpired. You alone made the choice to simply say “He now has his own place and crawls to work everyday through a tunnel.” You didn’t provide anything above and beyond that, and for people who had been following your blog for the last seven months who like Spike are rightfully in shock.

We can’t see inside your head. We can’t know your thoughts (though Grieffon appears to think I’m psychic). You alone are the one who can determine the narrative of your own works. You are the one who has earned all of the praise that you rightfully have earned… and who has to learn how to accept criticism when the narrative inside your works (not your comments, not your other works, not your other Tumblrs) leaves us asking “Really?” If not you, then who? Why should we assume that, if you don’t tell us otherwise, that you simply haven’t ejected him from Twilight’s life in favor of providing more opportunities for Super Sexy Mare Carpet Munching Time?

“My god, did you people don’t even think about this? Stop vicariously living through Spike, with the desire to live with Twilight. Or stop asserting that Twilight and Spike have a relationship. That’s not the case in my canon, and I’ve also done nothing to contradict the canon of the show.”

Such wildly inaccurate and insipid statements are beneath you, Ambris. Please don’t do this again. I’d hate to lose my respect for you.

“Simple fact of life: People grow up and eventually move out of their original home. “

And those are usually trying times for all involved, from the families to the individuals themselves. We were denied seeing any of that. We were denied wondering what Spike really felt. He wasn’t even allowed to speak for himself: Dash answered for him. Was Spike really ready to be on his own… do go against his great fear of being separated from Twilight? How does he feel about Twilight now that he has to picture her as a sexual being and not just his pseudo-family? Do Dash and Spike get along? They never really did in canon, after all. This is what you had an amazing opportunity to do with this Tumblr. You chose not to. It is unfair of you to yell at us for questioning why you did not.

These are the answers that we were hoping for, and that we’ve come to expect from you. Three frames that just tell us that Spike has been removed from the library doesn’t satisfy those who want to know more about how this relationship has affected Twilight and Dash, and those closest to them, beyond “How do you make each other blush?”

It’s your own fault in the end… you’ve already proven that your talents are capable of creating amazing and moving pieces.

We just don’t understand why you didn’t here.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I think Ambris said this already, but I think spike would be the first one to volunteer to get out of the crowded situation. Dash would be second to do that, but obviously she wouldn’t here. It’s also implied it was all consensual anyway (as in, he wasn’t kicked out) so what’s the problem?
