I found out I needed them at 13, and wore them ever since, laser-eye surgery(or any kind of surgery) is what scares me, and contacts-I just don’t want to have to deal with the annoyance of losing them.
I got glasses in second grade. I’m near-sighted, and the thought of sticking contacts into eyeballs scares me.
It’s not an usnusual case with IRL people. Some people go for contact lenses, or lazer-eye surgery. (Weird Al had lazer-eye surgery, so he doesn’t wear glasses IRL anymore.)
In fact, the reverse can happen to. Personally, I didn’t start wearing glasses, until I was 16.

This seems to go really well with one of my favorite headcanons: Bon bon is a changeling who found the real Bon bon dead somewhere and took her personality, the glasses were missing from the body so the changeling didn’t know she wore them.

I’m glad to see others pointing this out. While there’s been tons of cute and charming content portraying Lyrabon shipping, I’d really love to see more stuff showing them as an “Odd Couple”-like BFF pairing. Between Lyra’s excitability and Bon Bon’s grouchiness, there’s quite a bit of comic potential in that area.

One does have to wonder why she no longer wears (cute) glasses. (Contact lenses, or unicorn lazer eye surgery?) Same for Cheese Sandwich. (IRL Weird Al did have lazer eye surgery, so he doesn’t need glasses anymore. He said he has better then 20/20 vision now.)
