Alicorns can change the size of their wings.  
The same way other ponies can stretch their legs and get flattened like they are in a wily coyote strip.
 
Its magic… and its a cartoon running on cartoon physics.
 
This fandom really is resistant to all the over thinkers.

The “normal” pegasus wings they use do not look or work like real wings. They look more like feather dusters sticking out of ponies’ sides. By all logic, they shouldn’t even be able to get the pegasi off the ground.

actually now that that picture’s there for comparison, I realized that I fucking hate Twilight’s wings. Jesus, why didn’t they just go for the regular wings? Or just make those ridiculous things slightly smaller?

I’m so glad that we see Twi fly regulary and have some reactions with her wings. They feel more as a part of her body now than in the episodes after the premiere.

My theory: Although alicorn wings can be used for flying, they’re not as well suited for it as regular pegasus wings. However, flying is not their primary function. Alicorn wings are used mainly for dominance displays–when outstretched, they make the alicorn look much larger and more intimidating than a regular pony.

Actually, the big wings suit Twilight better, I think… They make her look more royal, and she’s now too tall for the normal wings.

I think it is mainly because basic pegasus wings are smaller, and have a more fluid motion to them, while alicorn wings seem huge and clunky in animation.
