Both engines are based on Sir Haydn from the Talyllyn Railway.
The “official” map made it seem like Equestria was as big as North America, but then again, we don’t have an exact scale.
My new headcanon is as follows: Our Cape Gauge is the closest thing to Equestria’s “Standard Gauge,” while our Standard Gauge is Equestria’s “Broad Gauge,” and would be more commonly used overseas, such as with the Griffons.
It’s not so much that demand isn’t enough the railroad appears to be the main way of getting around passenger wise and we’ve never had a plot reason to see a freight train canon wise but it stands to reason they exist (we know flatcars do at least).
Plus the rail network is built through some preatty tough terrain in places where standard gauge would have been way more expensive. Considering Equestria seems to be a fairly small country then their rail network is built to something akin to the old Colorado narrow gauge network.
I suppose passenger and freight demands aren’t enough to justify standard. Then again, I’ve seen comparison charts showing how small Equestrians are to humans, so I suppose it would fit.
Seeing how the Equestrian rail network seems to be built as simply and cheaply as possible (which is kind of the whole point to narrow gauge) they probably see no point in standard gauge.
