Make it utterly mystified as to why everyone hates it just for a few petty murders and torture and you’ve pretty much got it.
I hate to bring up Twilight, really I do, but I think it would be pretty easy to repurpose Bella and Edward as villains. The thing here is the the Protagonist Centered Morality, how everything the characters do is justified as long as they are the protagonist, but any action taken against them, however justified is characterized as being evil. The Sword of Truth novels are another excellent example of this.
