I think you’re all reading too much into Discord’s motivations here. It really is what it appears to be: for the first time in his eons-long existence, he’s found someone willing to put up with his shit, and he doesn’t want to lose that.

Plus, you know he wouldn’t be Discord if he wasn’t pulling a prank with a smug grin on his face. Thats just who he is. Besides, John De Lancie’s voice is too amazingly chaotic evil for him to be compassionate and caring.

I think he just hides the fact that he’s actually good lest he be mocked. Remember when he talked about never having a friend and when he realized that someone cared about him he suddenly changed? He acted like a dick to everyone for so long because that’s the only way he knew how to be and I’m sure he feels he still has to keep acting like that around everyone but Flutters lest he be taken advantage of.
