This is a depressingly plausible interpretation. Given how few lines Sombrero actually got to speak, we have nothing to go on but body language and facial expressions to guess at his intent.

I always thought that due to his dark magic, Sombra was always living out his worst fear…being alone. Certainly would explain why he was so desperate to hold on to the Crystal Ponies.
