Only during the single player battles. In PvP those positive effects don’t work, nor do they in the Battle Maison, Battle Institute, or other battles that emulate Tournament rules. They just like griping because they think it makes the single player too easy :P

lol, Smogon hates this feature, pokemans with full affection can cured themselves from status effects, make criticals more easily and dodge attacks.

Adding that function was the biggest stroke of genius in Game Freak’s existence. I’ve never felt more attached to a bunch of pixels and noises in my life as I do to my Pokémon after liberal amounts of snuggling.
 
Heck, the first time I got the combat cue “Aurorus is in a bit of a pinch. It looks like it might cry” I teared up and threw a Full Restore on him, while yelling ‘Hang on, bro! I’ve got you! You’ll make it!’
