Actually, Cadance was written up as a unicorn.
 
The book was the first time she was ever named a former pegasus.

I’ve got some pony facts:
 
-Princess Celestia was originally going to be a Queen, but network requested she become a princess because girls associate princess with good and queen with evil.  
-Princess Cadance was originally going to be a pegasus, and the change inspired the story Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell.  
-Braeburn was inspired by Owen Wilson’s character from Shanghai Knights.  
-The entire plot of It’s About Time was an excuse to dress Twilight up like Old Snake.  
-And of course the one everyone knows: Pinkie Pie was originally going to be a white pegasus and Fluttershy was to be a yellow earth pony.
