That became obvious two waves ago, when they started making toys of one-shot BPs, and canonizing names like “Banana Fluff” (for a pony with no relation to bananas).
Well, yeah. Keeping an old name is simpler than trademarking a new one. More importantly, it keeps one from losing the trademark on an old name.
One name is better than none.
There’s no clean fanart of Honey Rays here. Just the toy, and four R34 pics. :D
Generally derpibooru tries to use both names for all ponies, although I think “Honeysuckle” in particular might be worth jettisoning, since it just invites confusion with the G1 pony. Not too much point in keeping both “Violet Fritter” and “Lavender Fritter” both in action either. But I’m sure there are people who are attached to “Nurse Coldheart.”
That’s only an issue for ponies with a fan name, and even then, the toy names are still used in reference to the toys.
Doesn’t help if you want to tag the ponies with the tags they’ve had on the site before now.
