And here my idea of “shadow ponies” was just ponies that had adapted to living underground in darkness under the rule of the Prince of Shadows (who oddly enough wasn’t a bad guy in my story…)

Now this is what I expect from a Sauron-expy: Twisted, corrupt mockaries of life. I particularly like the bit about their forms resemblings Alicorns. I could see him making his servants in the shape of a symbol of goodness and harmony.

Naturally for fuel, they have a crystal pony on the inside, their misery and hopelessness fuel for the dark magic sustaining it.

Very amazing and excellent. They remind me vaguely of the Hounds of the Tindalos, particularly the line “jumping from shadow to shadow like wisps of smoke.”
 
Incidentally, could one argue that a shadow pony may be created by the remains of an executed insubordinate?
