That seems like needless busywork, especially since they won’t be able to invade very fast. It’d be faster and more efficient to kill two birds with one stone and mind control Equestria’s military.

Also, he’s not immune to magic. Enough power concentrated might defeat him either way. He’s not omnipotent.

A only other significant personality trait Sunset has besides being a bitch is that she’s impatient. I’d be willing to call that hole in her plan clever, if I could be convinced it was intentional.

That plan wouldn’t work. Even with all that preparing, she still would have to face Discord. He’d defeat all those people in seconds.

Go for grimdark and you may add mutated teens like Magical Living Bombs or human people fused into huge multi-limbed abominations.

Such a stupid plan as it was, but if she was patient and willing to spend a few more years there, she could have made it into an incredibly dangerous plot.
 
Step 1: Take over the students.  
Step 2: Take over the parents of those who live in military families.  
Step 3: Take over the rest of the military.  
Step 4: Take over the country.  
Step 5: Repeat the process in other countries.  
Step 6: THEN invade Equestria, but with trained, combat hardened military personnel and equipment, with an entire world population to replace losses.
 
Stupid plan, but one with a lot of potential.
