I’ve taken to asking artists whose art I particularly like to send me the raw .pngs (or even the working copy when I can swing it). Sometimes they get posted here to replace the old versions, when I feel like putting in the effort.

But… using the jpeg compression algorithm then saving the resulting image as a png won’t actually make it smaller. It will probably make the file even larger in most cases.

FurAffinity are silly.

I hate so much that I actually like this.

I typically dislike diaper anything (No offense to the people who like it, just not my thing) but god damn this is adorable.

Strange. This is a png image, but it’s covered in small jpeg artefacts. The same problem is present in the source image, despite that being a png file too. FurAffinity is definitely serving up a proper png file, so it isn’t an optimisation done on their end to save bandwidth.

The only conclusion is that the artist themselves saved the image in jpeg format, then re-saved that copy as a png image. There is one other png image by the same artist here, but that one doesn’t have the same errors.

I hope the artist at least kept a copy of the image in its original format, since this is a very nice bit of art (watermark aside).
