I happen to be in that mysterious blackish “other” region encompassing much of NC. In my experience, we generally call the darker drinks “cola” (which is actually more precise) and the others as “soda.” I guess the “other” could be the general term “soft drink,” which I often hear used casually around my hometown, or “root beer,” since that’s a particularly popular staple.
You might want to educate yourself regarding ‘Soda vs. Pop vs. Coke’: http://popvssoda.com/
The short version: In the South they call soft drinks ‘Coke’, and in the North they call them ‘Pop’ and in the West they call them ‘Soda’. I came from Texas and my grandmother called soft drinks ‘Soda Water.’
You have a good point. Even though it’s SUPPOSED to be the American spelling, my autocorrect (which normally marks most words like “colour” as not a word and suggests American spelling instead) marks “donut” as not a word.
I’m American and I hate using the American spelling. It’s like calling soda “pop” to me. There’s a difference between simplifying spellings and forgetting where the word comes from.
“Doughnut” is the British/Canadian/Commonwealth spelling.
Even though I’m Canadian, I always preferred to spell “donut.”
Jesus. >:3
…
Does that make any sense besides being all “LOLRANDOM?”
WTF is a ponut?
