There’s being a dick, and then there is gleefully warping someone’s identity for your own amusement.

I’d agree that he’s just a dick if he manipulated them with exact words (the whole “I never said the elements were in the maze” thing) and just sicked around with stuff like chocolate rain, but the sheer pleasure he takes in warping the ponies personalities is what pushes him over the line into “fucking goddamn evil” territory for me, admittedly a lot of this is raw emotional response due some issues I’ve had in my life in the past, so perhaps I’m not entirely objective here, but it also bothers me from a story telling perspective.

I’m not against villains getting redeemed, but I am against the getting redeemed with little to no character growth from anyone and I detest the “they were just lonely!” excuse being used as motivation.

I just really hate that episode. Discord was an incredibly evil villain through and through, and then they redeemed him in the stupidest way possible. “Oh he just rapes ponies minds because he’s lonely, not because he’s selfish sociopath with no regard for anything beyond what brings him amusement in the short term!”

I hate the concept of a reformed Discord, but I could accept it if at least it was handled well like by trying to teach him the concept of empathy, or by trying to show him why pulling apart peoples minds and world for his own amusement is a bad thing, but no. The way they reform him is by just having the character who is the biggest doormat on the show act nice to him.
