Good point, it often gets misused, largely because there is no universal definition.
Honestly its like pornography, you know it when you see it.

It should also be mentioned that fans often assume an original character is a mary sue right away. It’s become a knee-jerk reaction that often discourages people from trying to create a character.
Funny I was in the making of a black stallion unicorn but I learned there a sue or whatever and thus I had to scrap him for another(but from what you say a sue is a spoiled brat)
Its a term used to describe a sort of flat, flawless character that the plot revolves around sort of like how a black hole pulls in everything around it.
Common traits include everyone loving them, except for the villains (and you can tell they’re the villain because they don’t like the Mary Sue), absolute moral authority (even, in fact especially when perpetrating acts that are undeniably evil like rape and torture) and in fan works the authors favorite character will usually fall in love with them.
On rare occasions an author will attempt to divert accusations of Sue-dom by giving the character “flaws” like being too beautiful, or looking skinny even though they eat regularly, or possibly a mental disorder that is in no way accurately portrayed, but which excuses any bad behavior.

A character who gets everything handed to them on a silver platter and is loved by pretty much every character who’s around them.
