I dunno about “long before”, but Nyx definitely predates Chrysalis.
“Past Sins” from 2011 and 2012 final version. But before “Past Sins” Pen Stroke wrote MLP x “Alan Wake” crossover where little Nyx appears as a part of NMM.
Then NMM kills Twilight, Nyx attacks her and merges with her after then NMM becomes sane again and asks the writer protagonist to somehow write in revive Twilight suggesting her own life as a pay. But instead the writer turns her in a small filly which Twilight later finds in the basket in the water like Egyptean princess finds Moses and adopts her.

What cause? Funding next year’s filly scout cookie fundraiser? Sounds like a pyramid scheme to me.
