I understand what you mean.
It’d hurt me to see my favs like Fancy Pants go through a bad ending. In fact, I dropped a fanfic I was reading because of something they did with my boy Fancy.

Am intrigued and happy to see these characters get attention. But as a big fan of theirs I might not engage with this. I don’t want to see a bad ending for characters I like. I know it’s the nature of the genre of this game but I don’t want to see harm to these two. And likely will feel the same for others. I like mysteries but as a big fan of these two individually but also, both as a platonic pair of good friends and a ship, it would upset me. But am intrigued but don’t want them to be hurt. ;(

You're going to love me.
Statistically, couples in killing games are not a good sign. Hell, even for the two I can think of where both survive, technically one of them still “died”.
Even if we aren’t doing the shipping route, characters that have known each other before the game have also famously not done that hot when it comes to making it out together.
It’d be a MIRACLE if both of them somehow got through this.
That and we already have an arc from Top Bolt about independence that both of them could reasonably develop if the other dies. Sky Stinger having to not rely on someone else to grow and Vapor Trail stepping out of the shadows to show off how good she is already.
It’s a hard call considering how the death of one of them can easily spur the other’s character growth (2-2), but it also sets up an easy despair-inducing pointlessness when the other dies before anything can come of it. (1-3 and 2-3).
