Yes, Opaline was an abusive mother figure to Misty, but I do want to imagine that it’s not so black and white as just Opaline exploiting Misty. Misty betrayed her and Opaline could’ve easily done much worse than just take her cutie mark, but no. She gave her a chance. And when Misty rejected that chance, she just left.
Later, the way Opaline was giving Sunny the we’re the same villain speech, I got the impression it was a little forced and I want to think that’s intentional. It was less in trying to make Sunny see it her way and more that she herself needed affirmation from another who is close enough to her kind.
You’ve done so much to gain power, but it’s never just about power and control - it’s about affirmation, knowing you’re the best because you’ve followed your own path and all the pain, all the failure you’ve faced was worth it in the end. Because, when you’ve conquered the world, destroyed all your enemies, gained everything you’ve ever wanted and you still feel like crap, then… what’s the point?
I like this good end for Opaline. One needs to be careful who one gives a second chance to, but scenarios like this are honestly heartwarming.
