The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

I don’t know for certain. I think it depends on the state. I know only two states actually make it permanent for even after you’ve finished your sentence. You can’t vote in any state while actually serving time for a felony, and the amount of time you have to be out of prison before the right is restored is dependent on state law.

Well, it’s not a natural right, but it is a civil one. And I feel that it’s a privilege in practice too, but in my opinion absolutely anyone ought to be able to vote, even if they’re underage, since policies effect minors as well, and to discount them in the process because of when they happen to have been born is absurd. But I digress.

You know, I never understood why people call voting a right. it’s not, it’s a privilege and one that can be ,and often is, taken away.

The police are the arm of the government that deal with internal threats, so that’s probably where the term comes from. Just my guess.

@PonyPon
Like they say, arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics, but I’m cool with that.

@Background Pony
There’s a very real difference between me fighting for what I believe is right and fighting on a politician’s orders. I will fight for mine and others’ freedoms, but I won’t serve, in any capacity, a government that holds my rights hostage (like the right to vote).

Actually, modern and futuristic militaries are overwhelmingly lopsided towards logistics. There’s nothing in there that says you have to fight, only that you have to serve (recruiters just like to push that one part because they can always use more meat shields first and foremost). If you wind up fighting, curse your parents for gifting you with such an able body, not being able to sit out like the paraplegic who still gets to vote because he ‘serves’ by putting your unit stamp on your gun and your unit’s emblem on your armor. A ‘standing army’ of a million is most likely either only 150-200k fighting men, or is actually 5.5 million strong, depending on how the respective governments choose to account their logistics. And a ‘militarised’ society would probably roll in tons of non-fighters just because they enlisted. Like some small town baker could be considered to be ‘serving’ if he’s training people to run a ‘battle kitchen’ in their equiv to the national guard. He’s serving, without ever leaving home. Running with the nazis since they were brought up, a woman was considered to have ‘served’ (and could win a medal for) simply having many children. And since their society extended their military to its children, a toymaker or a children’s book author could be considered to be ‘serving’ as well by training the next generation.

@Ripple_Shine
I always felt police state was somewhat of a misnomer since the police either get stepped over or conscipted into a higher authority. Or perhaps ‘police’ is the misnomer, since they have no real power in the face of higher authority. The south american death squads and gestapo are more equivalent to the ‘alphabet soup agencies’ without any restrictions. The laws of a fascist country might encourage dickery in the local lawman but it doesn’t mean that’s always the reason the police are suppressing the populace. Sometimes it’s personal, and sometimes it’s an order from above. For the most part the beat cops in those societies are overzealous at doing a good job at following bad orders. Maybe giving them very specific named roles would cut down on the abuse since it would build a subconscious wall around overstepping boundaries, such as __ enforcer or __ guard or __ trooper. Using them interchangably with ‘police’ gives them nebulous and fluid boundaries IMO.

@Background Pony
would you happen to have done anything with the NLR? I see a toooooon of military bronies who dig the Lunar Republic. (Although that might just be because it’s the only color scheme that doesn’t make them walking targets.) The NLR blog/facebook has a lot of pictures of customised guns, patches, canteens and so forth

@Background Pony
I’ve seen that there’s actually two hardcore fascists running around here, so I’m sure they can just PM them if they’re that curious.

Also in Heinlein’s vision, only veterans are allowed to teach history and morality, children are taught that morality can be represented as simple mathematics, and both corporal and capital punishment are the best ways to combat crime and impart morality. In other words, the military is the ultimate authority, the state should be venerated above all, and that all citizens should be subservient to the state. If that doesn’t sound like fascism to you, YOU need to look up the definition of fascism, not people who disagree with you.

@Ripple_Shine
I never claimed that I thought this form of government was best. I was merely arguing against the claim that it was totalitarian and fascist.
You’re not giving up civil liberties. You can work where you want, live where you want, say what you want, ect. You just don’t have the right to elect the leaders of the country. And you accuse me of emotional appeal when your last post was essentially just that. Honestly, if you’re perfectly willing to fight for your freedom and the freedom of others, military service for citizenship shouldn’t be a sore issue for you. What Heinlein was saying, is that the right to vote isn’t truly appreciated and properly used unless one has actually bled for their country. But I understand you disagree and I’m willing to leave it at that, but to call is fascist, well, I think people need to truly look up what fascism is.

@Background Pony
You still haven’t explained why your system is better than the current one, you haven’t explained why it’s a good idea for me to give up my civil liberties, and you still haven’t explained what makes your fiat in particular better than the next authoritarian’s. Rather than actually engage me in real debate, you’ve fallen back on the same emotional appeal time and again hoping that I’d be swayed by your patriotism. All in all sir, you have failed on every level. Not the worst arguments I’ve seen, but by golly that one’s a keeper.

Make no mistake, if it comes down to it, I will gladly risk my life for my freedoms and the freedoms of those around me, but that does not give me special license to impose what I think on others. I believe that if you fight for someone’s freedom, then all you should expect in return is that they use it in a manner that they feel is proper, even if and especially if I disagree with it.

Don’t feel too bad though, I’d still vote for you. At least you’re transparent about wanting a police state.

@Background Pony
Yeah, I’m not buying it. You don’t have the right to decide who “Deserves” to have a voice just because you served in the military. One of the things the military you served in defends is the right to vote as it currently stands. The right to vote is part of what makes this country the country it is. You’re a hypocrite whether you realize it or not.

@Ripple_Shine
Paying money to the government doesn’t seem like an excuse to me because more than likely you’re using some form of government service that those taxes pay for. Any fool can cut a check, but one who’s willing to die for his country, COUNTRY, not GOVERNMENT, is the one who deserves to take the reigns and decide amongst their peers.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Background Pony
Uh yeah - I refuse to accept the reasoning behind it because the reasoning is bullshit. If I pay taxes, I think I ought to have a say in where that tax money goes, don’t you? “No taxation without representation” and all that jazz, does that not sound familiar? And how would your solution fix one goddamn thing wrong with this country? It wouldn’t. All it would do is make it so that fewer people have get to decide between a blithering dipshit from the left, and another blithering dipshit from the right. And you want to take away my right to association, my right to engage or not engage in the circus that is the electoral collage because I’m not willing to go to countries on the other side of the globe and fight in a war I may not feel is just and possibly kill a complete stranger?! Fuck you and the high horse you rode in on, pal. Because that is not freedom.
