The comic has referenced the show since the first issue.

Nightmare Night was a Boogeyman story, meaning you can’t take it serious

Nightmare Night didn’t fit in with the canon when it came out, it contradicts itself

My interpretation is that it isn’t canon, too many conflicts with Nightmare Night.

They’re separate, but both are canon. The show won’t reference the comic and the comic won’t reference the show, but all of these events are canon. At least, that’s how I thought it was stated by the writers. Hmm.
 
I’m starting to prefer the comic, though. All the magic of the show, free from the hindrance of toy commercialism and executive meddling.

Not really related to pic itself but I would like to hear whether people prefer the show’s or the comic’s canon?
 
And in case someone reading the comic doesn’t know, in the show Luna was not ON the moon but IN the moon. Lauren herself wrote the first two episodes and she even answered in her DA page that she meant Luna to be inside the moon in some sort of comatose state for those 1000 years while still being in NMM mode.
 
So please do tell me which one do you prefer. I’m not so sure myself actually.
