I’m not that arrogant, and will concede if I’ve been proven wrong ;)
and because it’s pretty easy to figure out who I really am
Well, thanks. A retraction is usually unexpected on the internet.
Ok, I take back what I said. You do seem to have some understanding of capitalism.
True, it’s just that the average capitalism today is so screwy, it really barely resembles itself. Instead of risking your own money for innovation, you risk the money of others, and ask for bail outs if it fails.
Lauren’s actually more of a true capitalist than Hasbro is at this point. There was a gaping hole in the market where nothing innovative had been done for nearly two decades, and she used her experience from working on PPG and Fosters to lead a team of pros to fill this void. Now Hasbro is trying to pull everything back to the relative safety of that enclosed, bubbled ‘status quo’ of GRLS ONLY LIEK PRINCESSES SHOPPING AND BOYZ”
Without Lauren everyone would just be showing up to collect their checks and basically writing ‘G3 in flash.’ It’d have occasional flashes of brilliance and probably about the same quality of music, but they would have had no motivation to build new things onto this world. The Gala would have been G4’s version of the Princess Promenade and S2 would have devolved into tea and crumpets and frilly doilies by the finale.
See also: The “Lego Friends” line of facehoof-worthy excuses for sets. Same deal there.
I think he means more that promotional stunts and hackneyed copycatting aren’t true capitalism. Hasbro has basically forgotten how it was forged. A true capitalist would be milking the shit out of all these extra fan ideas, and would have purchased the games instead of C&Ding them to hot potato them to experienced developers. WayForward for example, would have been a good company to pass MLPOnline or Fiends off to. Renn-era Mercantile Capitalism upholds the almighty dollar (or Florin or Yen or what have you), while American Capitalism is some weird amalgation of the original and safety-obsessed risk-averse protectionism of the suburban 60s. They’re deathly afraid of bad PR over anything else whereas a true capitalist would utilise it to abandon its old market for the new. Right now it’s flipped, they abandoned their old market, which was completely happy with 85% of their decisions, to cultivate a market in a demographic completely uninterested in existing toy lines. They believe it’s safe to do so because their focus groups are twits and yesmen that would go along with anything.
Also they would have improved their molds and plushes ages ago, or at least bought out anyone making high-quality customs to do so full time on their dime to make expensive special edition crap, or a run of high quality normal crap if they find enough of them.
Just imagine how many Trixies they could sell immediately after Magic Duel if they’d lined shelves across the states with consistent quality of this level.
We know this shit works because this is exactly what The Disney Store is all about. And that was what Hasbro was about even, back when they partnered with Disney for Aristocats and The Lion King. The only 90s-era Hasbro staff remaining seem to all be stuck in their Transformers line, since that’s the only line that isn’t falling apart.
That is what Hasbro cares about, but it’s not what Lauren set out to make.
I love how fans always forget that MLP:FiM is basically just a half-hour toy commercial, it just ended up being a really good, funny, cute, and well-made one.
That is a sad, sad belief. As if people wouldn’t create art in a non-capitalist society. Sounds like you live in the MAFIAA’s world.
Looks like someone doesn’t know how capitalism REALLY works.
Ohhh, looks like someone doesn’t know how capitalism works :P
this is one of many ways we’re making Hasßro have a hard time accepting us
@Itsthinking
Agreed. Although probably many across the spectrum who’re more vocal / taking the show waaay to seriously on that part of said spectrum
You win. :)
At least Sibsy isn’t letting some neigh-sayers get to her. Hope the others follow suit. It’d be sad to lose of the people who bring us the show.
There is a higher-than-average incidence of Asperger’s Syndrome in the brony community compared to the general population, and being incredibly literal/not getting sarcasm is pretty textbook Asperger’s, so it’s not like it should be unexpected.
sigh I’ve been sticking around with optimistic hopes that things would get better for a long time now and I just don’t know how much I can keep telling myself it’ll all be ok. I’ve never been good at giving up…..
If only we could.
