Lunar Supporter - Helped forge New Lunar Republic's freedom in the face of the Solar Empire's oppressive tyrannical regime (April Fools 2023).

She’s contemplating this new found mortality that’s been dropped on her. It’s like nothing she’s ever had to consider before. 40, maybe 50 more years, then what? What does it feel like to know there is now an end ahead? How will it feel during the aging process? Her mind is full of questions racing through her thoughts.

Yeah, that sort of thing is what I’m picturing. You have a lot of old buildings, not because they’re being preserved necessarily, but just because they’re still in use and there’s been no reason to tear them down.

I mostly just meant the mix of very old buildings with new ones. London is the only city like that that I’ve been to.
Pretty common in Europe. Not in places like Paris (largely flattened and rebuilt in Napolean III’s time) or Berlin (largely flattened in WW2), but many other places that escaped destruction in war still have many ancient buildings.

London is missing Mt Canterhorn.
London is kind of short on castles, too…the Tower is the only one I can think of (plenty of palaces, but not castles).
To me, Canterlot seems more like some place in the Alps, in central Europe - Switzerland, Austria, or the like (which the …horn name supports). Of course, those places are short of big cities, since they’re up in the mountains and not seaports. Can’t really think of a “city in the mountains with plains right below” in Europe…only thing that comes to mind is Denver, which is the wrong continent.

@Stellarator
I always envision the castle on the side of the mountain as the original site of Canterlot, but as it grew it spread into the plains below the mountain and became a growing modern city similar to Manehatten. The castle is still the royal residence and the seat of parliament, but the mainstay of the city is below it.

True. But as an author it’s at least useful to know what thoughts and expectations readers have, so I can make a conscious choice whether to satisfy or subvert them.

The key point there is it’s your world. You build it according to your idea of what’s right. When your story diverges from what I (or any other reader) had imagined, then it’s up to us to adjust, not you.

As far as it being large though, does it look too large? I mean, it’s meant to be Canterlot, the capital city.
If you’re using London as your guide, then yeah, too large. I mean, London was once the capital of the largest empire on Earth, and even until recently (i.e. Brexit) the largest and most important city in Europe. I’ve always imagined Canterlot as the capital of one of several smallish countries in it’s landmass…I’d imagine someplace like Dublin or Lisbon to be more of an analog (or analogue, since you like UK spelling).
But that’s just my opinion, everyone else’s mileage will vary :-)

I see your point. Sadly, I’m limited by what HDRI environments I can find, and that was the best night city one I was able to get a hold of.

Yeah, something like London was what I was picturing. I visited there a while ago, and as an American who isn’t used to it, the mix of old and new was pretty interesting. We ate at a pub that has been in continuous operation for centuries, within sight of The Gherkin skyscraper. We took the tube to see a small remaining bit of roman wall, with a little playground next to it. It was wild.
Definately different. I have relatives in England; my uncle’s house was originally built in the mid-1400’s. They’re near Colchester, where the castle was built around 1100. The castle itself sits on the foundations of a Roman building from ~50 AD. So you can go down in the basement of the castle (which is now a museum) and be next to a wall built at the start of the Christian era. And yet just a couple of hundred yards away are modern office buildings with solar cells on the roof.
Apropos of the image, if it were mine I might rethink the two very tall buildings with the heliotrope coloured lighting. They maybe make the scene look a little too modern and/or the city a little too large.

Solar Supporter - Fought against the New Lunar Republic rebellion on the side of the Solar Deity (April Fools 2023).

The cityscape behind her somewhat surprised me. It looks so modern, and the technology level in this Equestria is so mixed (eclectic).
Yeah, I hadn’t envisioned such a large place either. But we know there’s an older, somewhat spooky built up area too. So not too unlike London or some of the other large cities in Europe.
Idea: Do you think Twilight has “Intercourse while flying.” on her checklist?
Gosh, would that even be possible? I’m pretty sure birds don’t do it that way.
Of course, it might be in the “try this and see if it works (for science)” column. Hopefully she thinks to try it over water or some other soft surface.

Yeah, the tech is a bit all over the place. XD Kind of like the show. They don’t have smartphone grade stuff, but in general the tech level was (I read in an interview) “whatever the plot needs”.
I haven’t had a chance to show the princesses flying yet, sadly. I’d like to. Or rather, I haven’t in the comic. I have in my other art, and you can debate how canon that is, of course. I’d also like to show Celestia’s armour.
If I do ever have Rainbow Dash in the comic, I’ll have to make sure she hovers and flits about a lot.

Beautiful render.
The cityscape behind her somewhat surprised me. It looks so modern, and the technology level in this Equestria is so mixed (eclectic).
Smartphones, 3DS, and gamer tags, but no computers in Twilight’s lab, 1940’s steam train for royal travel, 1990’s speakers and audio equipment.
It’s fascinating how the presence of magic has affected their technology in many areas.
For example, the existence of winged ponies has probably inhibited the growth of long-distance transport.
[BTW, I haven’t seen the princesses fly. Does Rainbow Dash constantly hover in the Stellaratorverse?]
