I think that it has more to do with him not being a pony. He’s a different species from Twilight, after all.

To be fair, if he were meant to be a dog, he’d be a dog in FIM. They have dogs there, so yeah…
 
Plus really, other than twilight acting insecure to him, he isn’t really treated like a pet. Plus equestria girls, is being done by someone else. They have the same animators for the pony segments, but they have no say in what’s written. I think that if it were up to the writers, they would have hasbro change it.
 
Him being a dog, could just be done for hilarity, not accuracy.

Well that’s an opinion, not a fact.
 
Twilight is pretty cool, I’ll admit. But spike has never in the show, been treated like the pet. Him going to an alternate universe, via magic mirror, doesn’t make him being a dog canon in FIM. It only makes it canon in the EQ’s universe. FIM he’s given responsibilities, showing that twilight have trust and faith in him as an assistant. Plus in Just for sidekicks, they wouldn’t have a pet looking after pets, if he was one.
 
That would be like me, leaving my cat behind to watch the neighbor’s pet dog and rabbit. It makes no sense.

What? Spike is Twilight’s pet. It’s canon. Just like Twilight being Best Pony is canon.
