Ponies actually eat hooves?
So, channeling Twilight, I went and read up on it. Turns out that hooves and toenails are not quite the same thing, altho both are based on keratin, which is a protein. Hooves are much more complex. It also turns out that you can boil down hooves and get something similar to gelatin, which sets hard and could be grinded. So it wouldn’t really be weirder than eating Jello.
That said, I think hooves is just slang for something else (the box does say 100% grain, totally ignoring the grinded cane sugar in the ingredients list). Probably so kids will ask for it: “Mom! Get the hooves cereal!” “Sigh - that’s disgusting Jr” “No mom, they’re great!”

I like to imagine calling it grinded hooves is just a way to advertise the product.
First item in the ingredients list is hooves. Second is oats, and third is grinded cane sugar, so it’s not the most healthy thing (but who’d want breakfast cereal that didn’t give a sugar rush?)
