I don’t know if he would have become the Dragon Lord or if Ember would have kept that title. Remember-all dragons are long lived, Ember included. Chances are she would have become just as big over time as Spike.

Other than that, though, I think this is very well written.

He’s grown big if it’s Spike who left these footprints - comparing one to a pony it’s up to 1.3 meters long, and the gap between them is several meters. The weight of the dragon is so great that the footprints are quite deep down, several tens of centimeters in solid soil. So if it is Spike, he has become as big as in the G4 episode “Secret of my excess”, because we have seen what the G5 dragons looked like, based on these, the big dragon is probably a couple of dozen meters high. And these scales on the leg indicate advanced old age. Probably several centuries, if not at least a thousand years.

He also left so much magical residue in his footprints that Sparky was completely refreshed just by touching them - so if Opaline can drain him of fire magic, she’ll gain full strength right away. If he had stayed awake during the time the magic had disappeared to watch over the sleeping dragons as their guardian, it could only be the Dragon Lord, who might have been hiding from the New Mane 6 and camouflaging the sleeping places from them.

We know that dragons achieve great size through two different methods, magical greed with hoarding - or old age. If it is Spike, it means that it has been a very long time since we last saw him in the G4. He is the Dragon Lord after all, he won the specter and loaned it to Princess Ember, he may have claimed it in his old age, especially he was supposed to protect the dragonkind after the magic had disappeared. And since he was close to the alicorns for a long time, he could have magical strength in the magicless time.

I mean, they did give Sunny what looks to be the ruby heart that he gave to Rarity.

He’s not the only purple dragon, but that was definitely my first thought too.

Could be Spike, could not be. It would be interesting if it was, though.
