Are you saying that If Luna is more than Celestia’s inferior, then she’s a Mary Sue, that if Celestia is anything less than faultless, then she’s a tyrant, or that the idea that Celestia is partly responsible for Luna becoming Nightmare Moon can’t be explored in a way that does both characters justice?
Im saying things like that have been done before and have not resulted in what you said rather just end up making luna an woobie Mary sue while celestia just an tyrant for luna to be better than
let’s start over because I’m not sure what it is you’re getting at.
I made the argument that Luna is a more sympathetic character as her sister’s equal than as her inferior, and Celestia would be a deeper more relatable character if she showed some vulnerability. I also argued that, the idea that Celestia may have done something that provoked Luna into becoming Nightmare Moon had merit.
Now what were you saying?
It was more or less “hey guys I’m no longer evil! :D”
What does she admit to in Luna Eclipsed? From what I remember, she never mentions anything that happened before being restored by the elements.
Im talking about luna eclipse
Luna didn’t admit anything. Everything we know about what happened comes from the minute and 30 second intro to the first episode, that isn’t much.
That’s because luna herself admitted it was her own fault for what happen she got jealous didn’t talk things over and went to the dark side. Celestia clearly missed luna sure but she did what she had to do to save everyone else. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few afterall.
There’s a lot of older ones were luna is morally superior over everyone
I’ve seen Celestia feel regret in fan-art and fan-fics but not on the show. About Luna being perfect, I don’t believe I’ve encountered anyone who actually felt that way.
I do believe that as well.
But from everything that sector of the fandom has shown me,is that detractors are going to see what they want to see.
That’s pretty common look at all the art with celestia regretting what she had to do to luna.
It hasn’t done that in fact it seems to have just been done to justified lunas actions as in the right
luna hasn’t learned anything because in the eyes of her fans she has done nothing wrong because she’s flawless
On the contrary, I think that if the show allowed Celestia to show some vulnerability by regretting some decisions that she’s made, she would gain more fans.
>If Luna’s fans see her as perfect, why is she depicted as inferior so often?
Going overboard with the flaws is another way to make a Mary Sue.
Sure,Canon Luna has a background, but some fans refuse to see her beyond that.Luna seems to be a mare with a healthy amount of confidence and seems to be competent at what she does, yet most fans see her as inferior, underdog forever is like they feed on her suffering.
Other reason is because because of projection. For them,Luna represents rebellion and becomes somewhat easy to get related. If we make a poll with certain specifications(like age for example) we can tell the type of fans Luna has.
I do like your idea of Celestia making mistakes, yeah, that would make Luna more sympathetic (well, more that she already is.She is after all the most popular princess in the fandom),but knowing this fandom, that could become a double-edged sword for Celestia’s character, since for some people,it would cement the assumption that Celestia is nothing but a giant asshole.
The problem is that Luna fans don’t portray it as a honest mistake from a Celestia who didn’t knew any better, and took it as a lesson to be learned, growing up in the process, they portray it as a deliberate action from Celestia to seize all power to herself.
While Luna is portrayed as an “inferior” to Celestia, she is always portrayed as being morally superior to her, and her shortcommings are only used to make it more “inspiring” when she ultimately thriumps her evil nasty sister.
Either that or they portray Luna as a badass who can kill Chrysalis with a fart or something.
If Luna’s fans see her as perfect, why is she depicted as inferior so often?
The idea that Celestia somehow provoked Luna to become Nightmare Moon is interesting for three reasons, one it means that Celestia made a mistake that she learned from and became a better person because of, it makes Luna’s betrayal more justified, and it makes more sense why Celestia was willing to forgive Luna. Luna becomes more sympathetic and Celestia more dynamic.
I don’t think Celesita is the “prefect” ruler or sister just a good one.
If anything its Luna that her fans turned into the prefect one. Its not her fault she became Nightmare Moon it’s Celestia’s for explame
I see that, though I don’t really understand why. If Luna is inferior, then she never deserved to be as loved and admired as her sister, and If Celestia was always the perfect sister and ruler, then Luna doesn’t deserve to be forgiven for betraying her either. I lose all sympathy for the character if that’s the case.
That portrayal is the source of her popularity, if anything.
Really? From what I’ve seen Luna is constantly depicted as inferior despite her greater popularity. Something which I think hurts both characters.
Well one
it sounded like something luna fans would say (because they ARE that stupid)
you didn’t say nices things about Luna you said how super awesome Luna is while downplaying Celestia’s and if you can’t say nice things about a character without bashing another than get out of this fandom, you’re the reason why Luna is overrated and seconds away form a massive backlash
Are you guys seriously getting pissy because I said nice things about Luna? Wow.
B’sides, I was trying to come across as over-the-top irreverent to lighten the mood because people were getting hung up on the political implications of princessly positioning. On Twilight’s big day, no less. If that’s not absurd, I don’t know what is.
When is it said that raising the Moon is Luna’s only duty? According to Celestia they’re meant to rule together.
