I have always felt like they do. After all, they are taller and more regal looking than any other pony in the show, having an appearance that more closely resembles real life horses (at least in stature). They don’t give off a ‘cute’ look very well, nor are they intended to.
I think the closest comparison to how Sunny looks now is Twilight. After all, they are both of similar height and appearance.

Equestria’a little angel. Sunny looks so adorable in her Alicorn form. Far less intimidating than Celestia or Luna, or even Opaline.
