I’m a firm believer in the idea that a magical artifact with a dramatic backstory of how it was previously used is many times more compelling than a magical artifact with just a mechanical power and a price tag.

Any stories about spinning a yarn to help “sell” a magical item?

Tirek: Indeed, and he did so in a very particular way. The magical medallion around my neck was our bond of brotherhood. But it was more than a mere symbol of our pact. The matching medallion around Scorpan’s neck rendered my magic useless against him. A fact he used to his advantage when it came time to betray me.
Discord: You can’t always trust family, can you?
Tirek: I despise the idea of giving you this… but you’ve had the upper hand on me from the start anyway. With this around your neck, I will be unable to drain your powers. Is that enough “insurance” for you, Lord of Chaos?
Discord: Ah, the ol’ “magical item” boss weakness. Good thing the girls didn’t find out about that before I did! Yes, I think this will do very nicely.
