Description

In which Golden Horizon and Twilight discuss their origins as Alicorns.
Golden Horizon was not the type of stallion to go on a trip for no reason, so when he decided to make a surprise visit to his aunt, Twilight, something was clearly wrong. He packed a few things in his saddlebags and flew out of Canterlot, leaving under the cover of night and using his aunt’s moonlight to guide him to Ponyville.
He arrived as his mother’s sun was cresting the eastern horizon, touching down on one of the many balconies of Twilight’s castle. The expansive halls of the purple crystal building allowed him to quietly catch his breath as he approached the library. If he knew one thing about Twilight, it was that she was usually in her library.
“Aunt Twilight?” he asked as he clopped into the enormous space. “I need to talk to you.”
Somewhere in the stacks, the purple mare made a startled noise and trotted to the end of the shelves, poking her head around the corner to locate her visitor. Her face lit up when she spotted the pale yellow coat of her nephew.
“Golden Horizon!” She said, trotting out into the open. “You’re a sight for sore eyes. How have you been? How are your mothers? Did you get that book I sent you on the history of ancient Pegasus cloud sculpting?”
The young stallion smiled despite himself. Twilight’s enthusiasm and joy at seeing him was something he would never get used to. “It’s good to see you too, Twilight. I’ve been alright, Mother is well, and so is Chrysalis, and yes the book was quite interesting.” He lit his horn and pulled the leather bound volume from his saddle bag, and placed it on the nearest book cart for reshelving.
“What brings you all the way to Ponyville? You’re not the type to make the journey just to return my book.” She asked, trotting over to the worktable into the center of the room, using her wing to beckon Golden Horizon to follow. “Do you have a friendship problem that needs solving?”
Golden followed, apprehension building in him. Maybe he should have stayed home. He pushed the feeling down and sat at the worktable, and Twilight sat beside him. She placed her hooves on the table and lit her horn, pulling over a small stack of parchments and an enchanted quill, one that would self replenish with ink for efficiency.
“I suppose you could call it that.” He began, his voice wavering slightly. He really was beginning to wish he had stayed home.
“Well, tell me about it.” Said Twilight, lifting her quill. “Don’t mind my note-taking, I like to record these things so I can remember everything.”
“Well, at dinner the other night, I asked Mother about what it took to become an Alicorn.” He swallowed hard, his stomach twisting with anxiety. “I don’t really, you know, feel like I did anything spectacular to earn my horn.”
Twilight nodded, shifting her wings. She twiddled her quill in the magenta aura of her magic.
“And she got kinda cagey about it, and I kept asking because clearly she was hiding something.” He felt this swelling of angst in his chest as he continued. “And was getting so angry because clearly whatever it takes to become an Alicorn isn’t great.”
“What did she say?” Asked Twilight. She set her quill down, and gently pushed up her glasses with her hoof.
“Twilight…” Golden began, his voice straining on the second syllable. “She made us this way. She did this.”
“What?” asked Twilight, clearly confused. She stretched out a wing to comfort Golden Horizon. “What do you mean? I became an Alicorn by finishing Starswirl’s spell and helping my friends. Celestia only sent me that spell because she knew I was ready to become a princess.”
“You really don’t think about where we come from?” Golden shrugged Twilight’s wing off, furrowing her brow. “Think about how Mother and Luna and Cadence became Alicorns.”
Twilight sat back and thought. Celestia ascended after she was chosen as a sacrifice to bring the sun back, Luna got her horn when she flew into the falling star, and Cadence became an Alicorn when she defeated the Siren. All of them made great sacrifices for their power, but so had Twilight. Hadn’t she?
“We made sacrifices for our duties didn’t we? I made many sacrifices before ascending in the name of harmony, and I know that you have given things up for your art. And even Midnight Dreamer and Flurry Heart have made sacrifices, even though they were born with their gifts.” Twilight said in a soothing tone. She didn’t understand why her nephew was so upset. “I know how you feel Golden, I also once felt like my powers and wings were not deserved. You’ve earned your place as an Alicorn.”
Golden sighed heavily. “Twilight please, think.” He furrowed his brow. “They all had to die to become an Alicorn. Celestia was there when you ascended wasn’t she? Don’t you remember her telling you that you were ready? That it was time to fulfill your destiny?”
Twilight paled. “She was there. Why was she there?” She picked up her quill again, the plume of it trembling in her magic as she drew it over the page. “She wasn’t there before. I hadn’t spoken with her about a visit, and it’s so far to fly so fast.” She held the quill to the parchment, and ink pooled darkly where she pressed.
Golden stared at the purple mare, his face twisted with misery.
“Did she-” She swallowed hard, dropping the quill. “She killed me. She came and she did this.” Twilight shuddered, dropping her wings limply at her side. “She did this to me, she did this to you.” Her voice wavered. “Gaia, she did this to my daughter.”
Golden extended his wing around his aunt now, staring down at the white surface of the worktable. “I’m sorry I was the one to tell you.”
