I agree, they fumbled way too hard on the original continuity from G4, keeping it in a separate universe could’ve made things clearer.
Yeah, the writers are more to blame. They made her look evil as you so claim.

Twilight is smart and could have thought of better alternative solutions. It’s just that the writers had no logic in mind.

Personally, I don’t view that as Twilight being “evil”. I don’t know if you’ve actually seen Make Your Mark, but the reason why she did that is because Opaline, the main antagonist of G5 wanted all the three tribes’ powers to grow her own alicorn magic, and Twilight had to take drastic measures to prevent that by splitting the magic into three crystals to make sure that Opaline doesn’t steal it, which had the consequence of splitting the three tribes and lose their friendship with one another.
Yeah yeah, Twilight bad now. G5 bad now. Any other news?
The world presented at the start of the movie was a dystopia. If Twilight’s actions caused all that, that makes her a catastrophic failure at best and downright evil at worst.
None of these say Twilight is evil.
Well, in that G5 pretty much retconned G4’s whole ending and made Twilight evil. There’s the Crystals, taking away magic, separating the pony tribes, putting the dragons to sleep for hundreds of years… It’s hard to tell how many of these were Twilight’s decision because we get different, contradictory versions of how it all went down. But Twilight is not looking good. At the very least, she didn’t prevent any of them, and she’s stated to have directly caused up to three of them, depending on the version. This stuff wasn’t established two years ago, so this comic was pretty prophetic.
