The show was made up as they went along, so “God did it” was an easy way to cover up plotholes. Deus ex machina meets A Wizard Did It.

I imagine that they didn’t want to rehash the same ideas (too late) or perhaps they didn’t want to write for a child.
 
As for the God-thing, I imagine the BSG writers were so desperate to follow in B5’s tracks that they put in religious concepts where they had no logical place to put them. Monotheistic robots? REALLY?

Sometimes I think that the “Robot Chicken” sketch in an accurate portrayal of how they decided who would be a Cylons.

And how come that baby that was one of the kids of one of the Final Five never made important? Weren’t human-cylon hybrids a big deal? I mean so much shit happened because of the first one, so you’d think a second one would be has caused something at least.
