It’s not just that. Though that tendency is part of it.
The idea that we may have to regulate the pollution created by generating energy is anathema to many on the political right in the US, which means it has been exploited as a “wedge” issue by the right-leaning politicians for nearly as long as the issue has existed.
There’s been a decades-long, well-funded disinformation campaign carried out primarily by fossil fuel industry groups, their lobbying firms, and their anti-regulation think-tank partners in conjunction with those politicians. They use the same tactics that some of those same think-tanks cooked up for the tobacco companies to try and keep the FDA from regulating smokes. (Source, Source, Source)
So it’s not just a knee-jerk reaction, it’s also political weapon backed by trillion-dollar corporations to protect their revenue streams. That’s why it’s been such a durable form of denial despite all the evidence, and the changes we can see going on around us.

I find it baffling that people believe climate change isnt real.
I feel like a lot of it comes from conservatives who hear liberals say climate change and immediately write it off because it’s coming from people they don’t like.
But that’s just a theory.
