When I was 9, I decided to boil a can of seltzer water. Somehow, all that happened was a breaker trip, and though there was a nice round burn scar in the microwave, the damn thing other didn’t care and it kept working for a very good while after that.

That is actually a myth. Putting metal utensils in the microwave will not cause that to happen. If you want to cause sparks in your microwave, put some crumpled up aluminum foil in there. Or, if you want to continue living, perhaps do not do that?
