Luna and the NLR were popular during the first summer because she wasn’t used up until then. Her personality was a mystery, and people just gave her a shrinking violet moe-blob girlfriend who was perfect and never left her.
 
And like how people who like one sports team automatically hate others, enough people started thinking Luna would be a better princess, and then tried justifying it by inventing that “Tyrantlestia” bullshit, and then created the “New Lunar Republic” so they could group together to show how “edgy” they were. At that point, it was the “cool” option.
 
Like I said, most people wised up, and NLR fags faded by the end of S2, while most Luna fans just like her a bit more and think she should get more screen time. But, they still pop up. I remember in particular during Bronycon ‘12, when this guy, during the voice actor panel, said to Nicole Oliver herself that Celestia was evil and New Lunar Republic forever. Even Tabitha, Luna’s VA, said it was ridiculous.
 
TL;DR It was cool back then, and a few idiots still think it is.

Now, I don’t wanna start another argument, but Fluttermac at least has better relationship dynamics than certain other, more mainstream ships that have even less time on screen together.

They’re the minority. Sure, most people like Luna more than Celestia, but the NLR fanboys are people who gush over Luna all the time, make it seem like Luna was completely justified for becoming NMM, and legitimately believe that Celestia is a cruel despot. There’s not many, but there’s enough (like this OP here).

I…well,I don’t know if I should call them a vocal minority,considering a great percentage of this fandom consider Luna as their favorite.
 
If anything I’m afraid that the reasonable and grounded Luna fans are the ones in the minority.

Just when I think it’s over, I see another crappy Tyrantlestia or NLR fic pop up on fimfiction. Enough people call bullshit on it, so it’s not as prevalent as it was in the summer of ’11, but like any vocal minority they make an ass of themselves wherever they appear.
