I don’t think the Unity Crystals are good idea to begin with. I mean, if all of Equestria’s magic are stored in objects, well, you saw A New Generation but also what if someone use the crystals for evil or what if the crystals get destroyed and all of the magic would be lost forever.

The Mane Six did their best. Everybody lived in harmony and friendship for ages. Twilight made sure everybody in Equestria felt respected and cared, Discord himself said that. Don’t say all they did was for nothing. There will be always evil in the world but there will also be those who fight against it.

Twilight didn’t fulfill her destiny because Equestria didn’t stick together during the time she and her friends were alive and ruling Equestria.
The issue of the racist unicorn that divided the ponies didn’t happen long after Twilight’s reign, where most ponies could have forgotten her teachings without her guidance, but a few years after the events of “The Last Problem” where we saw that most of the characters featured in the show were still there.
So we aren’t talking about ponies unrelated to the events that took place in the show, that don’t know what happened during “The Ending Of The End” because they lived it firsthand and learned from those events that it was important to stay together.
It’s stupid that those same ponies have fallen into the same problem without knowing how to solve it and it’s surreal that Twilight and her friends haven’t been able to find a better solution than to create the crystals and force them to get along.
It’s strange that they didn’t understand that it wasn’t the right solution, in fact, what exactly caused the creation of the crystals?
They only made things worse, they made all of Equestria lose the magic it needed to thrive, caused the probable extinction of the other species, but this didn’t bring together the ponies that over the years have continued to divide until they go to living completely separate lives in G5.
When Twilight realized it wasn’t going to fix it, did she manage to stop things from getting worse?
Apparently not, because everything has gotten worse since then.
So yes, I’m really sorry, but as unfortunately things went this way in G5, Twilight failed and those crystals that she created are one of the main causes of Equestria’s downfall and that still continue to cause problems in G5 instead of brings ponies together once again.
Then I’m the only one to be disappointed by the total absence of important characters like Celestia and Luna, but also of Cadence and Flurry Hearts, in all of this?
It is as if after the end of the show they have disappeared from the face of the earth or completely ignore everything that has happened in Equestria.
I don’t know what to think about Sunny, honestly.
Even if she becomes a real alicorn the other ponies don’t seem to care, so I don’t think she will ever become a princess, at least until Equestria is fully reunited.
Twilight isn’t some omnipotent being. She cannot fix everything.

And now the G5 is saying that everything that happened was useless and that Twilight was just a random pony that ended up there by chance and destined to fail.
It doesn’t feel like it’s the right way to end the story and start building new ones.
It isn’t the right way, but isn’t that a little expected?
Destiny was what led the main 6 to all get cutie marks at the same time and follow the path to all be elements of harmony.
But Celestia in the past could control all 6 elements at once, even if it was once, when she sealed away Luna. No pony should have that power, and yet Celestia was deadset on Twilight not being equal to the other 5 but becoming her successor in every way imaginable.
And Celestia, Luna and Discord freezing the main villains into stone once again was…not a good example of character growth.
Twilight’s destiny was set in stone by Season 3. I’m not going to go into any more discussion about how I feel about her becoming an alicorn or a princess, but the fact remains that our ‘main protagonist’ had no divergences from her path set for her by the beginning of S4. Never did she argue with Celestia, for the most part she was Celestia’s errand girl even as a princess.
There were even certain episodes, odd ones like Twilight giving up books, where she obviously misses the moral lesson and decides to become a hoarder. Or harsh truth episodes where Discord tries to give a roundabout lesson for Twilight to be more open minded and suspicious when the opportunity requires it, but Celestia, Cadence or Twilight herself would deflect the lesson, despite it being necessary not to let….
…well, someone stepping in behind her back and causing G5 to happen before things got out of hand
I think you are right that it’s better that she doesn’t come back, as it has been a long time without anyone doing anything to fix this mess I doubt she is still alive, but if she will return and receive some important role in G5, I fear that she would transform in a Celestia 2.0 and I don’t think that would be a good thing for her.
Are we forgetting that Twilight essentially was Celestia 2.0 in the final scene? I think that even if she doesn’t come back, that was part of the problem to begin with, and I’m honestly worried that she will come back alone and just be Celestia 2.0 like when she left off.
Hasbro’s plans towards Twilight have always been weird. Most main protagonists get a lot more ups and downs and detours for character growth over 9 seasons, but Twilight was always deadset on following Celestia’s every word.
The fact that everything in G4 was derailed is, well, insane.
But it also makes you wanna ask, what did we think was gonna happen? Twilight was never ready to handle everything Celestia and Luna did mentally, and even if this happened after the other Mane 5 were dead, Twilight would be in an even weaker state of mind to stop G5’s reset of all Equestria from happening.
….
This is more of a private thought:
A big part of me thinks traditional G5 is not going to last, but something will happen that will allow the current heroes to stop the total destruction of G4’s culture from erasing. Yes, even time travel I would consider on the table with everything G4 did just being a waste. Imagine from the eyes of the new main characters looking at Equestria’s society and just being blown away.
G4 is too much of a juggernaut of a franchise, and this is the first time they are officially connecting two series, G5 being in G4’s future. (G4’s relationship with G1 was ‘open to interpretation’)

We have learned in the IDW comics and TYT ep.18 that the Unity Crystals are invulnerable and could not be broken if the purpose is permanent loss of magic. The movie has shown that they will not be activated if they are put together, something else had triggered them. Which we still don’t have an explanation for, because Sunny was chosen - and it wasn’t just because she got the three pony leaders to reconcile and because she talked about friendship. Everything indicates that a spell is activated under the right circumstances, and then it was meant that the Unity crystal was never “empty” of magic in the movie. I think it’s because forgiveness, friendship and reconciliation were essential when Sunny was chosen. On top of that, it’s possible - as we’ve learned - that Sunny unwittingly “unlocked” the magic that was “locked in” by Twilight.
So the magic was never in danger of disappearing if something happened to the Unity Crystals, even though the unstable magic caused by the emotional influence of the ponies has not been resolved back then in G4 or so far in G5. Instead, it has boiled down to the possibility that the permanent loss of magic was a deliberate act by someone who could manipulate the Unity Crystals - something even Discord couldn’t do. And if he can’t, no one else can do the same. Twilight knew what she was doing when she created the Unity Crystals with unknown spells that may be based on the alicorn magic and her friends, the Mane 6, played a very important role during this work. Even if the ponies were to attack each other they will not lose their magic forever. It will always return when it has calmed down and harmony is re-established. The Unity Crystals act like a dam - with hundreds of thousands of many small streams collected into a huge pond lake, held back by the dam.
This is very well thought out. Twilight didn’t make it worse; the unstable magic could not be repaired because it would then mean a violation of the ponies’ essence; how can she stop the emotional impact? Do the ponies have to do the same as the Vulcans from Star Trek? She saved the world, but was forced to remain the main cause, even though magic outside of Equestria seems neutral as it was in the ponies’ past. And she could do very little with the way the ponies’ world view is, interdependence has long been forced upon the ponies who had to take care of the world - the celestial bodies, the seasons and so much else. The caste system from the time before Equestria cast dark shadows on the ponies who could never break free of their herd instincts. All social policy could not cover the fact that Twilight’s society was fragmented, the unicorns had their own magical schools, for example.
Here, Sunny has the advantage that the story has been swept away. There was never any talk of Twilight becoming a tyrant. Celestia and Luna had their problems when they ruled together, which led to crises like the Nightmare Moon episode. Celestia maintained a god status and ensured that no one could oppose her, which Twilight - her own student - had suggested, yet she was politically astute and quick-witted. It was genius of her to force the unicorn aristocracy into Canterlot and then centralize Equestria under common rule with a harsh social control in place. But it is absolutely certain that she had confronted and solved many problems.
Furthermore; if the problem with unstable magic is because the windigos create emotional “channels” to suck out pony magic to turn it into cold and snow, then that means Twilight unwittingly created this very problem. It happened when she destroyed the windigos at the end of S9 - but the emotional impact on magic didn’t go away. Which surprised everyone when the ponies turned against each other and destructive magical ripple effects occurred. That means that this was completely new.
Then the Unity Crystals arose, and Twilight together with her friends completed their destinies.
Oh, and one thing; everything suggests that the ponies had forgotten the past and don’t know how special the alicorns are, or that Sunny can become a princess in the future - even if it’s her decision. They simply don’t know. Something that the mysterious Shadowy alicorn is going to enlighten them about when they see her - a giant, majestic creature with the sharpest horn, the largest wings and a magical radiance fit to inspire awe and reverence. Can see a lot of trouble for Sunny and her friends in Season 2 of G5.

I also don’t like perfect characters and Twilight has her flaws too, but the whole show, her character and her cutie mark were based on her and her friends being the chosen ones of the Elements to inherit and continue the kingdom of harmony that Celestia and Luna had created.

Wrong. If Twilight had ruled for many centuries and ensured harmony in Equestria as she was meant to do, she has fulfilled her destiny and completed the story of the G4, as an ordinary pony who in the end became a princess responsible for a bright future. She succeeded. Even though she was forced to create the Unity Crystals because the magic had become unstable as the ponies could not free themselves from the past, she has achieved a lot of good after all. From the movie and the IDW comics, it is clear that G5 is “only” 100-200 years old, before the magic is returned. Much of the technology in the G5 had probably originated in her time.
But the good times don’t last forever. Equestria came under attack and the message of friendship of magic was lost not because the ponies and non-ponies rejected it or forgot it, but because they were thrown into a world that had collapsed. It wasn’t Twilight’s fault. The G4 was not mistaken. All that had been achieved in the G4 was not in vain, the Mane 6 had become legends and Twilight fulfilled everything Celestia had wished for and more as she opened up Equestria to the world and brought the entire world under her sway that may have lasted for many centuries. It may even have been an “Empire of Friendship” where all realms are linked by bonds of friendship, tolerance and harmony.
Then came the collapse that no one saw coming. The IDW comics revealed that it happened quite suddenly without warning, and all of middle Equestria disappeared, while the magic was gone. It’s Sunny’s job to rebuild the world, and Twilight has no place in it beyond being there when Sunny needs to ascend and become a true alicorn. Twilight, if alive, will probably never accept being a princess again, especially if there are threats out there. She can retire and spend her last days in a peaceful place or ascend forever to her friends. Her destiny is complete, all she needs is a successor - and Sunny is obviously the pony who will close the final chapter for Twilight.
As Celestia and Luna at the end of G4, Twilight will walk away with a smile at the end of G5.

Well, if you are going to blame Twilight, you should blame the rest of the mane six and Spike as well. They were there when she did it after all.
Background Pony #CC81
Does this mean that we will see Twilight again in the future? Is she still alive?
Or they will show us other flashbacks on how Twilight has created the crystals and remind us how bad and stupid that idea was because, in addition to not resolve the conflict between the ponies, she has condemned all Equestria that has fallen into ruin without its magic?
As long as the motivation for Equestria’s fall was the fault of the regression of society or ponies in general, it might make sense, but the fact that they keep insisting on this story and blaming Twilight for what happened and making her pass for an incapable because she has not managed to put things right it’s bad.
