Tell Your a tale strikes me as something like what Rooster Teeth did with RWBY Chibi - a bunch of low risk, low cost web exclusives to keep the animators employed and trained up on the tools, to keep all the admin teams and render monkeys on the payroll, and to get some experience managing the new stable of script writers and storyboarders.
It’s like putting the whole production team on hold, without losing them to competitors. And because it’s not distributed none of their licensees or investors blow out a testicle if it isn’t successful.
Also they keep the copyright and brand active. Looks good on the quarterly report.
In the case of RWBY Chibi, some of the best stuff from the whole franchise came out of them. Most likely simply by accident.
I’m kind of thinking this is off topic now. I mean, if it wasn’t before, then it might be now …
But, yeah, I feel like Tell Your Tale is an experiment to see if they can avoid losing the people who know how to run the machines in between generations and not have to completely reboot the entire production line every 10 years.
Even for an ‘everyone is a freelancer’ company like Hasbro, that kind of ‘reinvent the wheel’ every time you rejigger the whole show can be very costly.

I think right now Hasbro has no real idea what to do with G5 and are mostly scrambling to keep MLP in the limelight any way they can.
Especially after the disaster that was the Star Wars toy licensing for them (they didn’t expect Disney to whiff it SO hard).
I agree with you, btw.
