You’re talking about a cartoon made for little girls that nobody in their right minds ever expected to gain a huge following among teen & adult males. Anything’s possible.
That’s probably because they’re not exotic i guess.
Japan has a crapton of animal related demons from foxes to chickens… so yeah.
Anyway i’m not really someone who can judge Japanese tastes since they’re just totally alien to me.
I’m not sure, cartoons that center on animals usually don’t do well, aside from with children there. (Kinda odd with their folklore on magical animals like kitsunes, and such.)
In fact, video games like Star Fox & Sonic with animal main characters aren’t very popular in Japan at all.
