Anyone can do it. Depending on the national park, you just need a permit and to follow certain guidelines. Thousands do it every year for a Christmas tree.

I’ve never understood the appeal of cutting down a tree in the wild. Going to a lot on a farm smells nice, has a ton of variety, and you’re guaranteed not to bring home any sleeping critters. You can even buy a tree from charities. Not to mention that, since wild spaces are mostly gone now, you’re probably stealing someone’s tree if you just go in the woods and cut one down…

Didn’t work out so well for me. It got dark early, so good trees were impossible to spot from the incredibly bumpy road. Then my mom and brother (neither of them are able-bodied) were following me, even though I’d told them I would just rush out, saw down a tree, and drag it back really quick. So I had to make sure they got back to the car before I marched off in another direction, but my lungs were gonna freeze before I found a good tree in that light, so we just gave up and got pizza.
Next time we’ll leave earlier.
