i interpreted his words there as a backhanded admision of his own lack of those traits and an admision that he knew full well why hitch was beter then him he just couldnt bring himself to accept it

I’m pretty sure people interpreted Sprout’s comments about Hitch being “handsome” and “strong” while ripping the calendar to be some sort of underhand gay commentary. On top of that, they’re the only two male characters who get any kind of meaningful relationship expressed, which alone would be enough to spark a ship in many cases.
I, for one, am all for it despite there being very little in the film to technically support it.

We don’t know that. The movie never really gave Sprout and Hitch a chance to interact outside of the plot of the movie.
At surface level, its easy to think Sprout is annoyed by Hitch but logically, its safer to assume Sprout is annoyed that he’s not sheriff. Hitch just happens to be in the way. Replace Hitch with anyone and Sprout would feel the same about whoever is in his way at the time. This doesn’t negate that Sprout still views Hitch as a friend because their friendship never had anything to do with who is or isn’t sheriff to begin with as the opening of the movie implied.

that my dear freind is what we call ‘reaching’ sprouts opinion of hitch is at best one of a rival, he is annoyed by Hitch’s sucsess and his own lack
im not saying hitch doesnt consider him a friend,hitch i think is the kind of pony who considers nearly everyone his friend, but sprout most definitely doesn’t reciprocate the feeling.

We don’t know that. We saw their childhood. They were close. But after the time skip, any form of character exploration was abandoned for the movie’s story narrative. I would even wager a friendship exists between Sprout and Sunny. The movie just never showed us because it never had a chance.
